Amuro Ray, often referred to as "Gundam," is a fictional character from the long-running Japanese anime franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam. He debuted in the original 1979 series, Mobile Suit Gundam.

Initially a somewhat rebellious and emotionally volatile teenager living in a space colony, Amuro is forced to become a pilot for the Earth Federation's experimental mobile suit, the RX-78-2 Gundam, during a surprise attack by the Principality of Zeon. His natural aptitude for operating the Gundam stems from his engineering background and an innate Newtype ability, a heightened spatial awareness and precognitive sense.

Throughout the One Year War, Amuro grows as both a pilot and a person, developing a strong sense of responsibility and camaraderie with his fellow crew members on the White Base. He becomes a symbol of hope for the Federation, while also grappling with the emotional toll of war and the burden of his extraordinary abilities. His rivalry with Zeon's ace pilot, Char Aznable, becomes a central conflict of the series.

Amuro's legacy extends beyond the original series, with appearances and mentions in subsequent Gundam installments, solidifying his status as an iconic and influential character in the science fiction genre.
